FROM THE FIELDS: Huron Quality Update

March 28, 2016

The growing season in Yuma, Arizona is winding down; supplies are increasing in Huron, California. By the week of April 4, many suppliers will transition to the Salinas, California region.

Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Green Leaf and Romaine Lettuce items are not available in Huron; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted. MFC Premium Iceberg is limited; MBA is being substituted as needed.

An increasing number of insects are being found in green leaf and romaine items from the Huron area. Higher insect counts are typical at this time of year as they fall into the open heads of leafy items. The bulk of insects are found at the core of the head; harvesting crews are working to minimize counts.

Iceberg stocks have increased in Huron. Insects are present in the outer leaves, but most if not all, will be removed for the final pack. Ideal weather has produced great quality with minimal defects.

Markon inspectors are reviewing fields daily and working with suppliers for the best quality available.
