FROM THE FIELDS: High Temperatures in Salinas, CA
Abnormally high temperatures were recorded yesterday in the Salinas and Santa Maria, California growing areas. Coastal regions were as high as the mid-90s and some South County regions of the Salinas Valley reached triple digits. Similar temperatures are forecast for today.
Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies and selecting the best lots available, but we expect to see many of the heat-related quality issues listed below through the next ten days. Ordering for quick turns is recommended, and maintaining the cold chain is critical for maximizing quality and shelf life.
Lettuces:
- Dehydration
- Growth crack
- Increased insect pressure
- Internal burn
- Shortened shelf-life
Strawberries:
- Bruising/Bleeding
- Decreased size
- Overripe/soft fruit
- Reduced yields
- Shortened shelf-life
Tender Leaf Items:
- Dehydration
- Increased insect pressure
- Premature yellowing, particularly in Arugula
- Shortened shelf-life
