FROM THE FIELDS: High Temperatures in the Desert Regions

February 05, 2018

Record-breaking temperatures were experienced in the Arizona/California desert growing regions over the weekend with highs into the upper 80s. Another high pressure system is expected to bring more elevated heat over the next several days, causing more defects to develop including, but are not limited to:

  • Dehydration
  • Dense texture
  • Fringe burn
  • Internal burn
  • Premature pinking in value-added items
  • Weak tip

This most recent round of hot weather will further push crops ahead of harvesting schedules and bring about a premature end to the season. Some growers will be making the short transition to Huron, California in mid-March before making the final move to Salinas, California in April.
