FROM THE FIELDS: HIGH TEMPERATURES IN CALIFORNIA

Salinas

  • Temperatures throughout the Salinas Valley are expected to reach a high of 95 degrees inland and low 80s in coastal areas over the next several days
  • Warm weather over the past week has already created some heat-related concerns
  • Expect quality problems in both commodity and value-added row crops, including:
    • Decay
    • Fringe burn
    • Growth cracking
    • Increased insect pressure
    • Shortened shelf-life in commodity and value-added items

Santa Maria

  • Highs in the low 80s are expected over the next several days
  • Growers will be work to keep fields wet to limit defects
  • Strawberry supplies may experience:
    • Bruising
    • Over ripeness
    • Soft texture
