FROM THE FIELDS: Heavy Lettuce Ice Throughout Desert Growing Region
February 20, 2019
Temperatures in the Arizona/California Desert growing region have caused heavy lettuce ice throughout the industry. Harvest operations will be delayed three to four hours, with tentative start times of 11:00-12:00 MST. Forecasts indicate potential lettuce ice through early next week.
Most crops are exhibiting epidermal blistering and frost damage. The cooler-than-normal temperatures will inhibit plant growth and maturity, leading to lighter weights.
