FROM THE FIELDS: Heavy Lettuce Ice in the Desert Regions

December 22, 2017

Early morning temperatures dropped significantly into the low 30s in the Arizona/California desert growing region, causing widespread lettuce ice to develop on all lettuce and tender leaf crops. Expect harvest delays in the fields this morning.

More lettuce ice is expected tomorrow and may extend through Tuesday, December 26. Long term quality related defects such as dehydration, epidermal blister, epidermal peel, and lower case weights due to heavier trimming will occur. Markon Inspectors will be monitoring fields and quality and report back as needed.
