FROM THE FIELDS: Heavy Lettuce Ice in the Desert Growing Region

December 28, 2015

The Arizona/California desert growing region experienced strong, cold winds with gusts up to 40 mph on Saturday, December 26. After the winds subsided, morning temperatures dipped into the upper 20s-to low 30s on Sunday, December 27, causing widespread severe lettuce ice to develop. The freezing morning temperatures and resulting lettuce ice will continue today through Wednesday, December 30. Significant harvesting, production, and loading delays of up to 6 hours or more will occur throughout the industry this week.

Markon inspectors are evaluating field conditions and will update further on the impact of this latest cold snap when more information becomes available.
