FROM THE FIELDS: Heat-Related Strawberry Concerns
Markon First Crop Strawberries are limited in Santa Maria and Watsonville, California; Markon Best Available will be substituted as needed.
Both of the above-mentioned growing regions have experienced extreme heat over the last three days with peak temperatures in in the upper 90s to low 100s. Overnight lows have also been above normal, which is having an impact on strawberry quality and supply.
Markon inspectors have observed soft texture, making berries more prone to bruising, as well as other issues such as decay, over ripe fruit, and sunburn. Shortened shelf life can also be expected from berries packed in either region and sizing will remain small over the next two weeks or longer.
Harvesting crews had to slow down, and in some cases, end production early due to the extreme heat; yields for the week are down significantly.
