FROM THE FIELDS: Heat-Related Quality Concerns in the Salinas Valley
June 18, 2019
California’s Salinas Valley experienced record-breaking high temperatures from June 9 to 14. Most vegetable crops were impacted and have been exhibiting varying amounts of heat-related quality issues.
Commodity and value-added harvesting and processing crews do everything possible to minimize quality concerns, but internal defects that are hard to detect may end up in finished packs.
Current defects present in lettuce items throughout the Salinas Valley include:
- Dehydration
- Fringe burn
- Increased insect pressure
- Internal burn
- Rib blight
- Shortened shelf-life
- Sun scald
- Weak tip
