FROM THE FIELDS: Heat-Related Issues in the AZ/CA Desert Region
November 28, 2017
Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Iceberg Lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region is limited; Markon Best Available will be substituted as needed. MFC Romaine and Green Leaf are available.
Over the last several days temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s have caused industry-wide heat-related defects in lettuce crops. These issues include, but are not limited to:
- Bottom Rot
- Decay
- Dense Texture
- Growth Cracking
- Internal Burn
- Seeder
- Weak Tip
- Tip Burn
Harvesting crews are working to remove the quality issue, leaving affected heads behind; case weights will decline as a result. A cooling trend with a small chance of showers on Saturday, December 2 is forecast.
