FROM THE FIELDS: HARVESTING DELAYS

April 06, 2020

California growing regions including Huron, Oxnard, Salinas, and Santa Maria began receiving rainfall on Saturday, April 4 that continued throughout the weekend and into today. Anywhere from .25” in Huron to 1.0”-1.5” in Salinas and Santa Maria have fallen so far. Showers will continue through tomorrow morning, Tuesday, April 7.

Growers of crops such as broccoli, lettuces, strawberries, and tender leaf items have packed orders ahead as much as possible to avoid shortages. Some have canceled today’s harvests due to muddy conditions. Those that are working will experience delays and will take measures to minimize dirt/mud on the product.

Markon inspectors will monitor supplies and update on any rain-related quality concerns in the days ahead.
