FROM THE FIELDS: Epidermal Peeling in Romaine Lettuce

January 08, 2018

Please click here to view a Markon Live from the Fields video about epidermal peeling that has developed in lettuce items from the Arizona/California desert growing region.

  • Freezing temperatures in late December caused epidermal blistering in romaine and other lettuce crops
  • The warmer weather that followed has led to epidermal peeling that is difficult for harvesting/processing crews to eliminate
  • Commodity and value-added romaine items will exhibit varying levels of epidermal peeling for at least two weeks
  • This week’s light rain will potentially cause decay to develop on leaves that are experiencing epidermal peeling
  • Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies closely and will update further as needed
