FROM THE FIELDS: Epidermal Peel in Yuma, Arizona

December 30, 2019
Extended periods of cold weather caused lettuce ice over the last several weeks in the Arizona/California desert growing region, resulting in industry-wide epidermal peeling in iceberg and romaine lettuce products. Iceberg lettuce crews can remove the damaged cap leaves, which will reduce finished pack weights, but romaine lettuce, due to its open-head style of growing has ice damage down into the heart of the plant that cannot be trimmed. Markon First Crop Iceberg and Romaine Lettuces are not available.

A low pressure system will keep morning temperatures close to freezing over the next couple of days, with highs only reaching the upper 50s and low 60s. Scattered rain is forecast for tomorrow, December 31.
