FROM THE FIELDS: Desert Row Crops

December 02, 2019

Yuma, Arizona and Imperial Valley, California growers are still dealing with muddy conditions, harvesting/loading delays following last week’s and rainy weather. Forecasts are calling for more rain late Tuesday, December 3 until Thursday, December 5. Markon’s grower/suppliers will pack ahead today and tomorrow in anticipation of the rain which will reduce harvestable supplies mid- to later this week. Broccoli, lettuces, and other row crop items are currently available, but the colder-than-normal temperatures forecast for the next two weeks will slow plant maturity over the next three weeks. Rain-related quality and/or shelf-life issues such as premature pinking and mildew pressure will also develop in some commodity and value-added items. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
