FROM THE FIELDS: Desert Romaine Quality

March 13, 2019

Over the past month, the Arizona/California desert growing region has experienced a wide range of weather, including freezing temperatures, hot temperatures, high humidity, and most recently, rain showers. As a result, many lettuce and tender leaf crops have been exhibiting stress and quality/shelf-life issues; romaine lettuce has been affected more than others.

Markon inspectors are instructing harvesting crews to trim more leaves than they normally would in order to minimize some of the more serious defects such as epidermal peel (see photos). Lighter case weights and lower yields can be expected as a result of the extra trimming.
