FROM THE FIELDS: Desert Region Weather Update

December 21, 2018

The Arizona/California desert growing region will be experiencing above normal temperatures through the weekend with highs in the low-to-mid 70s. This warming trend will be replaced by strong winds Monday and Tuesday, December 24 and 25, ushering in a strong cold trough.

Temperatures drop significantly December 26-29, with morning lows expected to dip into the upper 20s to low 30s. Widespread lettuce ice will cause significant harvesting and loading delays that will be compounded by the fact that most shippers are not harvesting lettuce and other desert crops on December 24-25 due to the holiday. Plant maturity cycles will also be disrupted which may cause supply concerns in the coming weeks.
