The Arizona/California desert growing region is expected to receive high winds with gusts of up to 30 mph today through Saturday, February 28th, as a series of low pressure systems pass over the area. Rain could begin to fall as early as Saturday morning, but will become more significant Saturday evening into Sunday, March 1st, and continue on periodically through Tuesday, March 3rd. Total rainfall amounts of .35 to .40 inches are predicted for the main desert growing areas.

Growers will be packing ahead in anticipation of the rain, and harvest crews will be taking measures to keep commodity lettuce cartons and products as clean and dry as possible. Elevated levels of dirt/mud may occur. Production and loading delays can be expected early next week pending field conditions.

Throughout the duration of the passing low pressure system, temperatures will drop below seasonal norms by up to 20 degrees. This may usher in the possibility of lettuce ice in the aftermath of the rain.
