FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION HEAT SPIKE

March 29, 2021

The Arizona/California desert growing region will begin and end the week with above normal temperatures. Daytime highs will be in the mid-80°s to mid-90°s on Monday, March 29. After slight cooling on Tuesday and Wednesday, high pressure is forecast to rebuild, causing temperatures to approach triple digits by Friday, April 2.

For some desert crops such as iceberg lettuce, the warm weather will spur on growth and help to increase case weights, but Markon inspectors will be monitoring all commodities and value-added items for any heat-related concerns. Tender leaf items such as arugula and spring mix may be more susceptible to bolting, dehydration, or other types of heat stress.

Maintaining the cold chain throughout distribution is a critical part of maximizing quality and extending shelf-life. Ordering for quick turns is also recommended
