FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION COLD SNAP

December 24, 2018

A series of strong cold troughs will pass through the Arizona/California desert growing region over the next few days. A chance of light showers Tuesday, December 25 and Thursday, December 27 could bring .10”-.30” of rainfall, but high winds and cold temperatures will have more impact on supply and quality.

Light-to-moderate lettuce ice is expected on Wednesday and Thursday this week, becoming widespread moderate-to-heavy lettuce ice by Friday, December 28 as morning lows dip into the upper-20s to low 30s. Cool, windy conditions continue over the weekend and another chance of light rain returns on December 30, followed by more lettuce ice on December 31 and January 1.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring desert vegetable supplies closely and will update further as needed.
