Unseasonably cold temperatures moved into the Arizona/California desert growing region on Sunday, January 31 and are expected to continue through Thursday, February 4. Morning temperatures in the coldest areas will dip into the low-to-mid 30s, causing widespread heavy lettuce ice to develop; daytime highs will be in the low-to-mid 60s.

Significant harvesting and loading delays are expected to occur starting today and will persist until Friday, February 5 as a result of the lettuce ice. Some crews will not begin production this morning until approximately 9:30-10:30 AM (MST).

Another wave of freeze-related quality issues is likely to occur in lettuce and other row crop items, but temperatures are predicted to warm up again by Saturday, February 6. Markon inspectors will be monitoring field conditions and crop quality closely and will update further as needed.
