FROM THE FIELDS: Desert Ice

December 18, 2015

Markon First Crop Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine Lettuces are limited; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.

Lettuce ice in the Arizona/California desert growing region will cause harvesting and production delays this morning for the fourth consecutive day. Early morning temperatures dipped into the low 30's in some areas, and harvesting crews will not start packing until 10:30-11:00 AM (MST) or later. Temperatures are expected to warm by the middle of next week, but sporadic ice may still occur in colder areas. Most lettuce crops are exhibiting freeze-related defects, but romaine and other leaf lettuce items that grow open, are most affected.

Markon inspectors are reviewing fields daily and monitoring quality changes. Inspections of Ready-Set-Serve items have also been increased.
