FROM THE FIELDS: Continued Lettuce Ice in the Desert Regions

February 26, 2018

For the sixth consecutive day the temperatures once again dropped into the low 30s causing heavy to severe lettuce ice to develop this morning. Crews will be delayed up to 2-3 hours before harvest can begin. Shipping delays may occur as a result.

This extended period of cold temperatures and high winds has caused dehydration and light case weights with possible late season epidermal peel and epidermal blister. Lower case weights for iceberg lettuce are already being seen and are expected to continue through the end of the desert season.

This late season weather pattern is expected to continue through Friday, March 1, before a high pressure system moves through the region which is expected to bring temperatures into the mid 70s and low 80s.
