FROM THE FIELDS: CONTINUED HARVESTING DELAYS

December 02, 2020

Morning temperatures in the Arizona/California desert region continue to dip into the 30°s in colder areas, causing lettuce ice to form on many crops. Harvesting delays of 1-3 hours are being reported for the third consecutive morning and have led to subsequent delays in processing and shipping of value added items.

Forecasts are calling for colder temperatures and more widespread ice this Friday and Saturday December 4 and 5. Now that the region has experienced several consecutive frost events, quality issues such as dehydration, frost damage, and epidermal blister are expected to develop in lettuce items over the coming days. Plant growth may also slow down significantly, impacting case weights.
