FROM THE FIELDS: Consecutive Days of Lettuce Ice in Desert Regions
January 13, 2020
For the fifth consecutive day, the Arizona/California desert growing regions are experiencing light to moderate lettuce ice. Cold nighttime temperatures in the mid-30s and high winds up to 30 mph have dominated the weather cycle, causing harvesting delays and frost-related defects in commodity and value-added items.
Current weather forecasts call for a brief warming period over the next few days, with daytime temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s, but nighttime temperatures will remain in the low 40s. Growth will be impeded, lowering head weights. Between .10”-.20” of rain is expected Thursday, January 16, possibly causing more problems.
