FROM THE FIELDS: Cold Snap in the Arizona/California Desert Regions

February 20, 2018

Light-to-moderate lettuce ice is covering the Arizona/California desert growing region, as morning temperatures dipped into the mid-30s. Harvesting crews will be delayed approximately one to two hours as they wait for crops to thaw sufficiently.

The current weather forecast calls for lettuce ice through the rest of this week followed by strong, cool winds. The low temperatures will slow plant maturity, resulting in a drop in overall case weights for lettuce items, and a higher percentage of Markon Best Available brand being packed if Markon First Crop weight specifications can’t be achieved.
