FROM THE FIELDS: CILANTRO

September 17, 2020

Salinas, Santa Maria, and Oxnard, California cilantro quality and shelf-life performance has been very good throughout the summer months with minimal issues. The transition from summer to fall can be a challenging time even when weather is within seasonal norms. The significant heat spikes experienced in the above-mentioned regions during August and early September may cause a decline in overall quality and shelf-life in the days and weeks ahead.

Growers have been adjusting harvesting hours and watering schedules to combat the heat, and most cilantro supplies have been near the coast where temperatures were cooler than inland valleys. Processors are also adding inspectors to remove heat-related defects as much as possible.

Cold chain management will be especially critical through the entire supply chain for maximizing quality and shelf-life. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
