FROM THE FIELDS: CALIFORNIA ROMAINE QUALITY
August 05, 2020
Raw product romaine quality is currently inconsistent due to weather conditions across California’s Central Coast. After an extended cooling period, coastal temperatures rose into the upper 70s to low 80s, weakening texture and increasing internal burn. The COVID-19 disruption has caused some growers to decrease romaine acreage, reducing both processor and commodity supplies once quality problems develop.
Expect to see an increase in bruising, internal burn, and premature pinking in upcoming commodity and value-added packs.
