FROM THE FIELDS: California Rain Showers

January 05, 2016

An El Niño influenced storm system is bringing significant rainfall to most California growing regions this morning. Light rain began falling at approximately 4 AM (PST) in Oxnard, California, and has since intensified; strawberry growers have cancelled harvest for the day.

Approximately 1.03” have been recorded already and the forecast calls for upwards of 1.30” total for the day, and more rain on Wednesday, January 6, and Thursday, January 7. By the time the storm system completely passes sometime on Friday, the 8th, many areas will have received 2.50” or more.

The rainfall is a welcomed sight, but there will be short-term effects on strawberry quality and production that will affect the industry for several days. Markon inspectors are monitoring field conditions and will update further as needed.
