FROM THE FIELDS: California Rain Recap

May 15, 2015

The low pressure system that passed through California’s Central Coast yesterday took a more southerly path than expected. Most areas of the Salinas Valley received less than .1 inches of rain, but there were pockets of heavier precipitation that continue to cause poor field conditions and harvesting delays this morning.

A small chance for more light showers remains for the South Salinas Valley and Santa Maria, California later today. Although rain totals were less than expected, strawberry supplies may have incurred rain-damage that will impact quality and supply levels throughout the next several days. Markon First Crop Strawberries are not available; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring all key Salinas and Santa Maria row crop supplies and will update further if other rain-related quality or shelf-life concerns develop.
