FROM THE FIELDS: California Celery

April 25, 2019

Celery is being grown and packed in the Oxnard, California growing region. Quality is a concern as seeder is present in most stalks (25% to 60% of the stalk length). Hollow core and growth cracking are also problems, but far less prevalent than severe seeder.

Expect supplies to tighten during the first half of May, as crop plantings were delayed and damaged due to the heavy rains of January and February.

Both quality and supply are forecast to greatly improve once celery production transitions to the Salinas Valley in early June.
