A Salinas Summer

The 2011/2012 winter desert growing season is already in our rear view mirror. By the time you read this, hundreds of truckloads full of harvesting and processing equipment will have been transferred from the desert region of Yuma, Arizona to Huron and eventually Salinas, California for the 2012 spring/summer season that includes lettuces (green leaf, iceberg, and romaine), tender leaf items (cilantro, parsley, spinach and spring mix), and various other row crops (asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, and strawberries).
Throughout the month of April, Markon’s team of quality-assurance inspectors have been covering these and other important growing areas to evaluate quality and supply levels, as well as keep our buying staff, member customers, and foodservice operators well informed during what can often be a challenging transitional period for the produce industry.
