FOOD SAFETY UPDATE: Outbreak of Cyclospora Infections in Canada
The Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada are investigating an outbreak of locally-acquired Cyclospora infections in Canada. An investigation to determine a common source of the illnesses is under way. Imported fresh produce products are currently items of interest however at this time a specific product has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing. Markon is closely monitoring the developments of this outbreak investigation in addition to the Cyclospora outbreak investigation in Texas, please see attached food safety update from Friday, August 5, 2016. At this time there is no link between the two outbreaks.
What we know:
- There have been 51 cases of Cyclospora infections reported in British Columbia (1), Alberta (2), Ontario (44), and Quebec (4)
- Individuals became sick between May and July 2016
- One case resulted in hospitalization
- A specific product has not been identified and the investigation is ongoing
