The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and public health and regulatory officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Carrau illnesses linked to pre-cut melon products that contain cantaloupe, honeydew, or watermelon, or may be mixes of some or all of these melons and other pre-cut fruit.

What we know:

• As of this time, 117 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Carrau have been reported from 10 states
• Illness onset dates range from March 4, 2019 to April 8, 2019
• Epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicates that pre-cut melons supplied by Caito Foods LLC, is the likely source of this outbreak
• On April 12, 2019, Caito Foods LLC of Indianapolis, IN issued a recall for pre-cut watatermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and pre-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons supplied at the Caito Foods LLC facility in Indianapolis, IN.
  • The recalled products were packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers and were distributed in retail establishments in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin
• This investigation is ongoing, and FDA and CDC will provide updates when more information is available.
