The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other state and local health departments are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella illnesses that are linked to clover sprouts served at Jimmy John’s locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. FDA is currently working with state partners to complete trace back procedures to identify the source of the pathogen, to determine distribution and to learn the potential route of contamination.

What we know:

• To date, 8 people have been infected with Salmonella Montevideo
• Illnesses span across 3 states
  • Illinois (2), Minnesota (1), Wisconsin (5)
• People in Illinois reported becoming ill on December 20 and 26, 2017
• The most recent illness began on January 3, 2018
  • CDC notified FDA of the illnesses on January 16, 2018
• 7 out of the 8 people reported eating meals at Jimmy John’s restaurants in Illinois and Wisconsin the week before illness onset
  • All 7 ill people report eating raw sprouts on sandwiches from Jimmy John’s
• FDA, along with Illinois and Wisconsin health departments are working to trace back the source
• This investigation is ongoing

The FDA advises consumers not to eat sprouts served at Jimmy John’s restaurants in Illinois and Wisconsin due to the product’s potential to cause salmonellosis.
