FROM THE FIELDS: LATE SEASON LETTUCE ISSUES

September 03, 2020

Various lettuce crops in California’s Salinas Valley are exhibiting sporadic issues such as sclerotinia, Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), and other physiological defects which impact yields and supply forecasts. Some of these challenges are weather-related, and others are common to see late in the growing season. As soil nutrients become depleted, plants become more susceptible to viruses, bacteria, and insect infestation which are also vectors in spreading disease. The attached pictures will give you an idea of how these viruses affect plants.

Not all fields or varieties are affected, but some growers are reporting 20-30% yield loss in green leaf and romaine crops in particular. Another heat spike forecast for this weekend could increase supply concerns if younger plantings experience maturing issues.

Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies and will update further as needed.
