FROM THE FIELDS: Continued Ice in the Desert Regions

January 08, 2020
The Arizona/California desert growing regions are experiencing another round of lettuce ice. Harvesting delays of up to three hours are being reported as morning temperatures are in the low to mid-30s.

This latest round of ice will continue to slow plant maturity. Quality issues such as epidermal blistering and peeling will become more prevalent, keeping carton weights and yields below normal. The current weather forecast calls for ice through the rest of this week, with the heaviest ice being received this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
