UPDATE: IDAHO POTATOES
July 30, 2021
The 2020-2021 Markon First Crop (MFC) Idaho Burbank Potato season will end by the week of August 16. New crop, field-run MFC Norkotah Potatoes will become available towards the end of next week.
Storage Crop
- Remaining Burbank quality will be a challenge as pressure bruising and hollow heart problems become more prevalent
New Crop Norkotahs
- New crop Norkotah cartons are expected to hit the market $3.00 to $6.00 higher than storage crop Burbank stocks
- The U.S. No. 2 potato supply will be scarce, as new crop potatoes exhibit very few defects during the early stages of harvesting
-
Quality in test digs varies by region
- The first Norkotahs harvested will have a higher-than-normal percentage of misshapen potatoes
- As growers move into September and October, quality will be excellent
-
New crop potatoes have not completed the sweat process
- Minor skinning and excess moisture will be observed in fresh-run potatoes
- Potatoes release moisture as they cool, causing a white surface mold that is easily brushed off
- The white mold dissipates as the potatoes dry
New Crop Burbanks
- Production will begin in late September/early October
- Growers anticipate a slightly below-average yield and size profile; the crop will be dominated by 70- to 90-count supplies
