UPDATE SUMMARY: Week of October 31, 2016

November 03, 2016

Bell Peppers, Cucumbers, and Squash:

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Green Bell Peppers, Cucumbers, and Squash are available in Georgia and Florida
  • MFC Green and Red Bell Peppers are available in California; MFC Green Bell Peppers from Mexico will be available in two to three weeks, followed by red and yellow supplies in mid-December
  • Green bell pepper stocks are ample on both coasts; expect markets to remain low as Mexican supplies (into Nogales, Arizona and South Texas) ramp up
  • Red and yellow bell peppers will remain tight; expect elevated prices until Mexican production starts
  • MFC Cucumbers will increase in Mexico by mid-November

Fall 2016 Harvesting Transition:

  • The fall harvesting transition from the Salinas Valley to Huron, California (the San Joaquin Valley region) continues to move forward
  • Reports out of Huron reveal good quality with light insect pressure and wind damage
  • Some iceberg growers have elected to harvest earlier in Yuma, Arizona; limited shipments have started this week
  • Growing conditions have been favorable in Yuma; initial reports indicate good quality

Limes:

  • MFC Limes are available from Mexico (loading in McAllen, Texas)
  • Quality is good: blanching is an occasional problem as growers reach the middle of the season
  • Production will decrease during the winter growing season (November through April)
  • Expect elevated prices by late November
    • Stocks will tighten over the next two weeks

Onions:

  • Abundant supplies of MFC Onions are available from Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington
  • All stocks are being shipped out of storage
  • Supplies from these regions possess solid, globe-like shape, firm texture, and moderately spicy flavor
  • Expect steady prices for red, white, and yellow onions through the holiday season

Ready-Set-Serve Fresh-Cut Orange Products:

  • Markon’s supplier of fresh-cut oranges has begun transitioning into new crop California Navels
  • Expect differences in the internal color of fresh-cut orange items due to mixed varieties of raw product
  • Flesh color will be light and slightly bitter; color will deepen and flavor will sweeten as the season progresses
  • A full transition into Navels is expected by mid-November

Strawberries:

  • MFC Strawberries are not available
  • Very few stocks are being harvested for the fresh market
  • Berries are being sold in local California regions only due to decay and shortened shelf-life
  • Supplies are expected to increase within the next 10 days while weather improves
