Leaf Lettuce
Common Packs:

6-, 12-, and 24-count cartons.

Receiving Inspecting:

Good quality leaf lettuce should be fresh, crisp, and well-colored. Avoid lettuce that appears wilted or shows signs of spotting or decay, or product with yellow leaves or cracked ribs.

Storage Handling:

Short-term storage recommendation (7 days or less)

  • 34-36° F/1-2° C
  • 90-98% relative humidity
Shelf-Life:
14 to 21 days.
Troubleshooting:

Leaf lettuce is sensitive to ethylene gas; exposure to the gas may cause russet (brown) spotting of the leaves. Store away from ethylene-producing fruits and ripening rooms.

Wilting can result from storing leaf lettuce in an area with low humidity.

Rapid deterioration may occur if lettuce is stored at high temperatures. Store properly.

Dried, translucent leaves can indicate freeze damage.

Usage Ideas:

  • Add color to sandwiches, burgers, and tacos with leaves of red leaf lettuce.
  • Toss together red leaf and green leaf lettuces, green grapes, slivered almonds, and pumpernickel croutons; serve with a side of creamy peppercorn dressing.
