Strawberries
Common Packs:

Flats, trays, and half-trays containing clamshells of various counts

Receiving Inspecting:

Strawberries should be plump, firm, bright red, and have a natural shine. Caps should be fresh, green, and intact. Avoid green or white berries, or those that are mushy, shriveled, or leaky.

Storage Handling:

Short-term storage recommendation (7 days or less)

  • 32° F/1° C
  • 90-98% relative humidity

Proper storage is critical to shelf-life. For every hour outside of temperature, strawberries lose a day of shelf-life.

Shelf-Life:
7 to 10 days.
Troubleshooting:

Loss of color/flavor and shriveling can occur if berries are stored for long periods of time; use soon after receiving.

To avoid internal breakdown and decay, store berries properly and rinse immediately prior to use.

Usage Ideas:

  • Combine chopped strawberries with cubed avocados, diced onions, minced jalapeno chiles, chopped cilantro, lime juice, and salt; serve with tortilla chips.
  • Drop whole strawberries into lemonade, orange juice, Champagne, and ice water.
