Receiving Inspecting:

Choose rutabagas that are clean, well-shaped, heavy for their size, and fairly smooth. Avoid product that shows signs of shriveling, flabbiness, or growth cracks.

Storage Handling:
 

Short-term storage recommendation (7 days or less)

  • 32-36° F/0-2° C
  • 90-98% relative humidity
Shelf-Life:
30 days.
Troubleshooting:

Shriveling and loss of color can occur if stored in an area with low humidity.

If stored in a warm area, rutabagas may show signs of decay. Store properly.

Water-soaked spots and light brown discoloration of flesh indicate severe freeze damage.

Usage Ideas:

  • Add peeled and chopped rutabagas, potatoes, yams, corn, and peas to beef stew.
  • Glaze rutabagas with butter and brown sugar; roast until tender.
