Papayas

Papayas
Receiving Inspecting:

Good quality papayas should be firm with unblemished skins, regardless of degree of ripeness (most papayas are shipped while still green to prevent damage from rough handling).

Storage Handling:

Short-term storage recommendation (7 days or less)

  • 60-65° F/16-18° C
  • 85-95% relative humidity
Shelf-Life:
7 to 21 days.
Troubleshooting:

Pitted skin, decay, failure to ripen, and off-flavor are indications of chill injury; store properly.

Skin discoloration and hard flesh areas may be caused by excessive heat treatments required for quarantine (insect control).

Usage Ideas:

  • Toss spring mix, crab, and julienned water chestnuts with creamy papaya dressing.
  • Roll rice paper with cellophane noodles, slivered carrots, green leaf lettuce, strips of papaya, mint, and basil; serve with peanut dipping sauce.
