Receiving Inspecting:
Good quality horned melons should have yellow rinds; avoid melons with split or cracked rinds.
Storage Handling:
Short-term storage recommendation (7 days or less)
- 45-50° F/7-10° C
- 85-95% relative humidity
Shelf-Life:
7 to 21 days.
Troubleshooting:
Horned melon rinds are susceptible to bruising and damage; handle with care. Store and display fruit in a single layer; do not stack.
Pitted rind, water-soaked spots, and softening indicate chill injury. Do not store below 45° F/7° C.
Prevent accelerated yellowing and softening - keep horned melons away from ethylene producing fruits and ripening rooms.
Usage Ideas:
- Whisk horn melon gelée into plain vinaigrette; serve over romaine and green leaf salads.
- Add horned melon to yogurt-cucumber raita; stir in fresh mint and baby dill.
